CHEOPS (CHaracterizing ExOPlanet Satellite) was selected in 2012 as first mission for the newly created ESA S (Small Missions) program. The mission was adopted in 2014. After five years of development, CHEOPS was launched in December 2019. Since then, the instrument has been delivering high-quality scientific data. CHEOPS is presented as example of a typical instrument development carried out by an international consortium led by the University of Bern, whereby the focus is put on the managerial and technical challenges, in particular the thermo-elastic stability of the opto-mechanics and the thermal control of the focal plane, as well.

Az előadóról:
Daniele Piazza is 61 years old, studied mechanical engineering at ETH in Zürich and obtained his M.S. in 1989, and his Ph.D. in 1993. He has over 25 years of expertise in the development of scientific instruments for space research (optical instruments and mass spectrometers). Since 2005 he's been leading the mechanical engineering team at the Space Research and Planetary Division of the University of Bern. He oversees the flight design of mass spectrometers and optical instruments, is responsible for the environmental testing infrastructure, and is involved in the definition of future payloads. Daniele Piazza had the system engineering role for several instruments realized by the University of Bern.
